Twitter new location geolocation feature scrrenshotGeolocation is now active on Twitter, with most users now being able to add their location to all of their Tweets. It is now also possible for the majority of users to pull up location-related information based upon one single tweet.

Even though you have been able to do this, using third-party apps, this is a great breakthrough, as now the feature is included on Twitter’s site without the need for a separate app. This was first seen a few days ago, and since then people have been using it as if there was no tomorow.

It’s quite simple really, if a tweet has location information available, a location icon will appear next to the end of the tweet by-line. When you click this icon, a Google Map will appear that shows the location when the tweet was made and any other location information if available.

This is all very important, as location-based social networking features are set to be one of this year’s biggest trends. With Facebook being late to the mark on location, Twitter has just gained the upper hand of social networking. This may be what brings Twitter into the realms of the social media giants, but you’ll have to keep watching to find out!
