From first looks, the Google Nexus One is super-thin, very light and the fastest phone on the market, beating speeds of other top of the range smartphones such as the iPhone 3GS and the new Motorola Droid. Including the latest version of the Android software, v2.1 (Eclair) and the ultra-powerful Qualcomm QSD 8250 1 GHz processor there are high expectations for the Nexus One...
When the phones are compared next to each other, the Nexus One’s screen stands out from the rest with a brighter screen and better colour depth. The Nexus One loads web pages slightly faster than the iPhone 3GS and is considerably faster than the Droid. With Google’s voice recognition software and the noise cancellation microphone on the back of the Nexus, web browsing is significantly faster and simpler with most users being able to use the voice recognition in their cars and offices with low error rates. To compete with the iPhone’s functionality the Nexus One also offers a 3D App launcher, voice to text for ALL text fields, Facebook integration, widgets for the news and weather, live wallpaper, active noise suppression, stereo Bluetooth and a 3.5mm headphone jack. The mighty 1GHz processor means compared to other Android phones, you can run more applications simultaneously without the phone slowing down or freezing up. The 5 megapixel camera takes better pictures than you would expect and it has some great low light settings even without the flash, but it’s still only 5 megapixels. The battery life for 3G web browsing and 3G calls is exactly the same as the iPhone 3GS, and its standby time is 250 hours.
The end result is a ‘smartphone’ that is slightly faster, thinner and lighter than the iPhone 3Gs, which is disappointing for people who have switched from iPhone’s to the Nexus, but if you’re a hardcore Android fan then this is definitely the best phone that runs the Android software.
